About Smallholder Gate
Smallholder Gate is a practical guide for people running small farms and big backyards in Australia. We cover the jobs that come up around chickens, stock, fences and dams, and we pay particular attention to the wildlife that shares the block with you.
Every article is a job sheet. It gives you the short answer first, the steps, a real example from Australia, and a checklist you can print and take out to the shed.
How we work
Everything here is written by the Smallholder Gate editorial team. Each figure in an article links to a numbered source, and we prefer government pages, scientific papers, Landcare groups and local reporting. Where the evidence is thin or the sources disagree, we say so. Where we could not check a number, we leave it out, which is why some job sheets tell you to get your own quote instead of giving a price.
Some practical details come from rural suppliers and breeders, because they are the people who publish them. We name them in the text so you can weigh that up.

What this site is not
Smallholder Gate gives general information. It is not legal, veterinary, electrical or financial advice. Rules on fencing, wildlife and poultry differ across states and councils, so check with your local authority before you build, and see a vet about sick animals.
Corrections
If we have something wrong, please tell us. We would rather fix it than defend it.
